01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Haruharu, part of the appeal is choosing how spicy you want your sundubu and whether you’d like it simmered. One diner ordered the hottest option, “hellishly spicy”, simmered, and said it was hot enough to bring on a sweat from the first bite. After finishing the stew, they ordered rice and had it turned into a rice porridge in the remaining broth. From the challenge of the spice to the final spoonful, it made for a memorable meal.

For a shared hot pot, there is also the menu’s “Signature Sizzling Hot Pot”. This mildly spicy dish combines beef offal with cabbage, Chinese cabbage, bean sprouts, kimchi and tofu. Pork belly can be added, and you can finish with udon, soba or rice porridge. Choose between a spicy dish and a pot of vegetables and offal to share, depending on what you feel like eating.

To start with something lighter, try small plates such as rolled omelette, Korean pancake or mildly spicy cucumber. One diner remarked that the portions were generous despite the tapas-style format, making the dishes seem well suited to sharing. Haruharu is an izakaya in Tatsumihigashi, and is also described as suitable for solo diners. It opens from 17:00 in the evening and is closed on Sundays. The listed payment method is cash only, so bear that in mind when planning a visit.
